Festive Fun!

December is a blend of festivities, warmth, and some chaos!! As we say goodbye to another year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on 2026 and look forward to what 2027 holds. While the holiday rush can be busy, knowing your consumer rights ensures that every purchase is smooth and stress-free. It can also be a difficult time of year – take care of your mental health and well being through self-care, healthy habits and knowing what supports are there.

Shopping at Christmas!

While the holiday rush can be busy, knowing your consumer rights ensures that every purchase is smooth and stress-free. In Ireland, understanding your rights, and how online shopping protections work, helps you shop with confidence!

Shopping online

Just like when you shop in a store, you have rights when buying online, but when you buy something over the internet, you also are provided with some additional rights. Normally, purchases need to be returned within 30 days, however the vast majority of retailers extended this period to take into account the Christmas shopping period.

The online store or trader is responsible for the item until it is placed in the customer’s hands. If the item is visibly damaged do not accept it from the courier. Request that they return it immediately. Also, if a product bought online is found to be faulty or broken within six months of purchase then the online trader must provide a replacement, repair or refund.

What happens if my online order doesn’t arrive?

If you bought from a website within the EU, you have strong rights. The delivery times depend on what you agreed when you bought the item and if the delivery time was not agreed the item should be delivered within 30 days.

Shopping in the sales

You have the same rights shopping in the sales as you do at any other time of the year. Items sold in a sale should be of merchantable quality, fit for their intended purpose and as described to you. If an item is faulty, your rights do not change just because it was on sale.

Good to know!!

CheckMyLink.ie is an easy-to-use online tool which helps you to determine whether a website is likely to be legitimate or a scam. CheckMyLink is provided in Ireland by Cyber Skills in collaboration An Garda Siochana and other partners. More info…

Gift Vouchers

Most, but not all, gift vouchers are covered by Irish law to include a minimum five-year expiry date. Visit ccpc.ie for a full list of what vouchers are covered by the legislation, for example One-4-all gift cards are considered ‘electric money cards’ and are not covered.

Be aware that if a company goes out of business before you use your voucher, it is unlikely to be honoured regardless of the expiry date. Make a note of any vouchers you receive this festive season and the amount so they don’t get lost in the Christmas chaos.
